Data Arcade Tournament 2022

Data Arcade Tournament 2022

Ministry of Education (1st Place)

The Data Arcade Tournament (DAT) is an annual visual analytics competition exclusive for officers serving in the Singapore Public Service.

Organised by the Government Technology Agency’s Data Science and AI division, this 5-month long visual analytics competition celebrates visual analytics talents from across all government agencies, encouraging officers to upskill their data capabilities and be more data driven in their work. The tournament is supported by Tableau and Qlik, and teams must choose either one of the tools to compete in.

In order to compete in the Data Arcade Tournament, each team must first compete in their respective government agencies e.g. teams from MOE must first compete within MOE, teams from HDB must compete within themselves and so on. The champions of each government agency would then go ahead to compete in the Grand Finals of the tournament, where they would present their dashboard to an audience of hundreds across all agencies.

Each year, the judges of the Data Arcade Tournament elect a theme for that year, and teams must utilise datasets from their own agencies to best represent that theme. For this year, the theme was “Twist & Turn”.

Tableau Dashboard

As I was working in the Ministry of Education at the time, my goal was to procure an interesting dataset within MOE and use Tableau to showcase the theme — Twist and Turn. After much deliberation, we decided to focus our dashboard upon one of the more controversial issues in Singapore — Primary 1 School Registration

Our team made use of several visual and predictive analytics features in order to describe the balloting situation amongst primary schools in Singapore. Do check out the full dashboard in the link below.

Amidst fierce competition, we were able to secure 1st Place within MOE. My team moved on to the Grand Finals where we were ultimately 6th overall amongst the Champions of the other government agencies!
